IFAW’s state-of-the-art marine mammal research vessel conducts vital whale research and educational programs around the world.
The Song of the Whale team carries out studies of threatened and endangered marine mammals and their habitats, educates students, trains scientists and develops non-invasive research techniques for whales.
With its custom-made observation platforms, specialized computer, recording and satellite communications equipment, and the combined technical experience of its full-time team, Song of the Whale is a unique purpose built research vessel designed by British marine architect Simon Rogers.
Special underwater hydrophones and computer software allows the team to carry out unique, non-invasive research surveys. The team has built a particular expertise in using passive acoustics (listening to the sounds made by whales and dolphins) to identify, track and survey different species.
The team uses this scientific expertise to discover practical solutions to known problems that threaten whales and to identify emerging problems so that positive management action can be taken. This research helps to protect whales by learning more about the distribution and abundance of species under threat and by raising awareness of the effects of potential man-made sources of disturbance such as military sonar and other types of intense underwater noise on marine mammals and ecosystems.
The Song of the Whale’s educational and outreach program includes work with school and community groups, other scientists and researchers, politicians, decision makers, the media and the general public, all aimed at generating support for the conservation and protection of whales.
